CO₂CO unveils palm oil alternative that could revolutionize cosmetic supply chains

The creators of this new technology, Mibelle Group, LanzaTech, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Interface and Bioprocess Engineering (IGB) said they aimed to reduce deforestation and create a more sustainable supply chain.

Palm oil has long been a cornerstone of cosmetic formulation, but its production has raised environmental and traceability concerns that are increasingly regulated by European authorities. Pressure to adopt sustainable ingredients is driving the emergence of innovative alternatives that require thorough regulatory assessment.

UK-based company CO₂CO has developed a palm oil alternative derived from microalgae cultivated in bioreactors using recycled CO₂, resulting in a functional ingredient with equivalent properties but a significantly lower environmental impact. This innovation not only addresses market demand but also aligns with European sustainability and traceability objectives for cosmetic ingredients.

From a regulatory perspective, introducing such ingredients requires careful assessment of their compliance with Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, along with applicable safety, labelling, and Product Information File (PIF) requirements. As a novel ingredient derived from microalgae, it will also be essential to ensure adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and cosmetic traceability requirements.

Because this biotechnological process is highly controlled, it offers detailed documentation that can facilitate cosmetic audits and integration into Quality Assurance systems. However, companies will need to adapt their evaluation and documentation procedures to meet regulatory expectations.

At regulatory.cosmeticsinMind, we support brands and manufacturers in evaluating, documenting, and complying with European regulations at every stage of product and ingredient development. Our platform centralises legislation, regulatory alerts, and guidance, streamlining decision-making and compliance processes.
